what we do, falling out of a perfectly good aeroplane or helicopter really is a pretty silly thing to do, but at the same time it is absolutely fantastic. It is also pretty bad for the environment. Globally at the moment all skydiving operations burn fossil fuels to get us up to altitude (there are some other options in the pipe line but we felt we needed to start making a change now) so this got us thinking. How can we all reduce our impact of jumping?
Stop jumping is of course the best way of reducing the environmental impact but that does not really align with becoming an old skydiver so well, so that idea was out.
We could say we will all carbon offset this, reduce that, but what does that mean? To us, that was not clear enough, maybe it’s just because we are pretty simple folk, but we needed a clearer, simple message and plan. This is where the #1jump1tree came from. We don’t think it can get much more simple than that and you know what, it seems to be working with donations to plant over 148,410 trees in year one is a fantastic start.
I’m sure some of you will be thinking will one tree really sequester (the fancy word for suck up or absorb) the carbon for one jump, and the best bit about it is does! Of course it does vary between aircraft type how many people are on the aircraft, how the pilot fly’s, what altitude the DZ is at but for the vast majority of cases the maths does work.
So if #1jump1tree works, how do we get these trees planted in the most efficient way. How do we ensure that the planting itself is done in a sustainable way? For this we chose to partner with Trees.org. not only do they plant the trees but educate support the people who will be planting the trees and living in the area, they have been established for over 30 years and are globally respected in the sector.
